A dark line low on the wall or along a tile joint that comes back after it dries. Water from a pipe under the floor travels through the bedding and surfaces away from the break.

Close every tap in the house and listen to the pump. If it starts by itself, the pressure is dropping in a closed line, and water is leaving it somewhere.

Why it hides
Why a leak staysout of sight.
In most Kuwaiti homes the water pipes are buried: they run through the bedding under the tiles, or inside the wall under the render and the paint. A pipe rarely bursts all at once. It usually starts as a small opening at a joint or a rub point, and the pressure widens it from there, day after day.
The water leaving that opening does not come straight up. It sinks into the bedding under the tiles, follows whatever fall it finds, and surfaces at the first place it can: a tile joint, the bottom of a wall, the corner of a room. That is why the damp you can see sits away from the break, and why opening the floor at the wet patch usually opens sound floor.
Heat makes it worse. A hot line expands and contracts every time the heater runs, and that movement works on the joints until one of them gives. Most of the leaks we find in houses are on the hot side, or at a fitting close to the heater.
Water leaks and drain leaks are two different problems and the difference has to be settled first. A supply line is under pressure, so it loses water constantly, makes a sound, and shows on the meter. A drain line is not under pressure, so it only drips while something is being used, makes no sound and never moves the meter. The methods are not the same, so the work starts by deciding which one you have.

Finding it does not. We isolate the lines, watch the meter and listen at the fittings, all of it above the floor. Breaking only comes later, at the point we marked, and only where the repair needs it.
Water leak detection is the general check across the house supply. Acoustic listening is the method used on a line while it is under pressure. Tank leak detection works on the tank itself and its outlets. Most jobs start with the first and land on one of the other two.
The bill only moves when water is escaping from a line under pressure. Damp with a flat bill usually means a drain that drips while it is being used, moisture wicking up from the slab, or a leak past the meter such as a tank.
In a block the shared runs pass between flats, so damp showing in yours can start above you. We begin in the flat where the mark is and follow the line upwards, which needs the building management or the caretaker so we can reach the shared part.
It is a useful first step and it tells you whether there is a leak, but not where. If the damp eases after the main valve is shut, the problem is on a pressurised line, and the rest of the work is deciding which line and which point.
